Chafford Gorges Walk

Chafford Gorges Walk

Wednesday 11th June

In the heart of the Chafford Hundred Housing Estate, next to the Lakeside Shopping Centre, the Essex Wildlife Trust has a nature reserve and visitor centre. They have taken over old chalk pits that had been neglected for many years.

It is now an area of special scientific interest, with many unusual butterflies, insects etc.

Recent archaeological investigation in the Lion Gorge has revealed evidence of flint napping going back many thousands of years.

The walk coincides with the flowering time for wild orchids, quite a few different varieties being identified. There is also a viewpoint over the Thames Estuary.

Some of the paths have very steep steps.

Light refreshments will be available at the Visitor Centre both before and after the walk.
